A while ago, I wrote a post about our favourite music. I think it makes sense to follow this up with a post about our favourite films too.
Mine & Husband’s favourites:
We both happen to quite like musicals. Moulin Rouge was watched probably too many times during our early dating, as was the Producers. More recently, we’ve been enjoying Les Miserables and the soundtrack is often playing in our house.
We have a similar sense of humour so tend to find the same comedy films hilarious. To give a few examples, Pineapple Express, Your Highness and I Give it a Year.
I think it would be accurate to describe husband as a fan of Wes Anderson films. I’m not so keen on all of them, although Darjeeling Limited is just brilliant, I highly recommend it. In fact, I now want to watch it tonight.
Being massive geeks, we both like sci-fi and fantasy films. Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings (the ridiculously long extended version that does start to get a little bit annoying towards the end), as well a plethora of comic book adaptations. The only time we’ve managed to go to the cinema together since Pip was born was to see Thor 2, which was awesome.
We do differ on some things. I will now openly admit to liking both the books and film adaptations of the Twilight series. Husband actually used the word ‘disappointing’ when I confessed this to him. I also like period dramas, particularly adaptations of Jane Austen novels. Although he also hates these, we have found common ground in a mutual liking of Wuthering Heights, particularly the version with Tom Hardy & Charlotte Riley as Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.
Mine & Pip’s favourites
There are a few films that me and Pip love watching together. A couple are ones that I bought as a child/teenager and now she loves them like Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, the Toy Story series and Shrek. There are some of her films that I don’t mind watching like Tangled and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
If we’re having a ‘girly day’ as she calls it, more often than not, Mamma Mia is put on and, of course, much singing and dancing around the living room ensues.
Whole Family Favourites
There are not many films that we all like. I’m sure this will change as Pip gets older but for now, our favourites are often higher than a PG rating so they’re currently off limits to her. We all enjoy Muppet Christmas Carol, which we watch on Christmas Eve and a few other times during the year. Pip can watch the first Harry Potter film too, which she loves and I’m really looking forward to reading the books to her as she gets older.
Doctor Who is definitely our favourite TV programme and our Blu ray copy of the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, has been watched endlessly. It’s such a great show and has really inspired Pip’s play and her love of space, as well as giving her a great role model in the character of Clara!
So these are our favourite films. What are yours?
